About Us / Philosophy
History
Georgetown Hill Early School was founded in 1980 by
Ellen Cromwell who now serves as board chair and Head
of the School. Georgetown Hill Early School is a non-profit
organization and since 2000 has expanded to multiple
campuses in Washington, D.C. and the Maryland suburbs.
Philosophy
The Georgetown Hill School endorses a “whole
child” approach
to teaching and learning that reinforces and expands upon
children's natural competencies. We call our program the
P.L.A.N. curriculum, as developed by Ellen in Nurturing
Readiness in Early Childhood Education: A Whole Child Model
for children 2-5, Allyn & Bacon.

The primary components of the curriculum are play, learning, the arts and nurturing. The P.L.A.N. curriculum cultivates learning by integrating activities that promote each child's multiple intelligences. In a carefully planned yet creative environment, children are given opportunities to acquire knowledge as they build upon emerging interests and develop friendships. Cognitive, social and physical development are fostered through relationships, the creative arts, foundational content areas, basic skills mastery, values training and motor skills acquisition.
Georgetown Hill's innovative, child centered
program: |
- Cultivates the mind, body and creative spirit within each
child.
- Trains in practical life skills, manners and social development.
- Fosters an independent attitude that encourages children
to make choices, solve problems, reflect, reason and test their
environment.
- Supports a process-before-product orientation that reinforces
the development of ideas through experimentation and discovery.
- Encourages a disposition for learning that enables students
to take pride in their accomplishments.
- Establishes a strong foundation in literacy and through the
language arts and promoting aptitudes for thinking and problem
solving through creative and constructive play.
- Allows children to develop a sense of themselves and how
they fit into an interdependent global community.
